OpenAI has brought AI controls off the screen and onto the desk. The company has revealed the Codex Micro, a compact keyboard built with Work Louder for developers who spend much of their day using Codex.

Priced at $230, the device focuses on quick access rather than replacing a full keyboard. It also disappeared from stock not long after going on sale.

A shortcut to faster coding

The biggest talking point is a rotating dial. Instead of digging through menus, users can adjust how much reasoning Codex applies by turning the knob. Lower settings favour speed, while higher levels give the AI more time to tackle difficult coding tasks.

There is also a small joystick for launching common Codex actions. That means developers can start reviews, inspect code or trigger other commands without switching windows.

Built around daily workflows

The Codex Micro includes 13 mechanical keys that can be customised for regular tasks. They can launch new sessions, confirm changes or perform other shortcuts chosen by the user.

Small RGB lights also provide live updates. They show whether an AI agent is busy, idle or has finished a task. It is a simple feature, but it could help anyone juggling several coding jobs at once.

For developers who rely on Codex every day, the hardware may save a few clicks. Casual users, however, may struggle to justify the asking price. Either way, anyone hoping to buy Codex Micro now will have to wait, as the first batch has already sold out.
