Blizzard’s bringing StarCraft back, just not in the way anyone expected.
Dan Hay took the BlizzCon 2026 stage to confirm the franchise is returning, and it’s a shooter this time, not another RTS. It’s set for 2030, which makes it the first proper new StarCraft since 2017’s Remastered. Switching genres entirely is a strange call for a series that’s always been about base building and unit control, but I’m intrigued rather than annoyed.
STARCRAFT – Cinematic Announcement Trailer
The rumours had been floating around for a while. There were reports back in January pointing to a BlizzCon reveal, and just this month, word came out that Nexon might be trying to buy the development rights off Blizzard altogether. Feels like Blizzard wanted to plant a flag before that story took over the conversation.
The trailer itself follows a young Dominion recruit through training, backed by a voiceover that’s pure Dominion propaganda about duty and sacrifice. He dies in combat before the screen cuts to the 2030 release window. It’s heavy handed on purpose, and honestly, using the Dominion’s own manipulative messaging as the framing device is a smart touch.

Four years is a painfully long wait. But after eight years of nothing, I’ll take it.
