Marathon player count figures questioned as 2.2M estimate sparks debate

Bungie’s Marathon is back in the conversation, but not entirely for the reasons you might expect. A new estimate suggests strong early traction, yet the numbers come with more than a few question marks.

What the report actually claims

According to Ampere Analysis, as reported via The Game Business, Marathon reached around 2.2 million players during its launch month. The breakdown reportedly puts PC at 1.1 million, PS5 at 660,000, and Xbox Series X/S at 525,000.

On paper, that looks healthy. In reality, it’s not that simple.

Marathon sales hit 1.2 million but the real story is who’s actually playing

Players, sales, or something in between?

The biggest sticking point is the definition. “Players” doesn’t automatically mean copies sold, especially in a modern live-service landscape where trials, promos, bundles, and shared accounts can all blur the picture. Without official figures from Bungie or PlayStation, it’s impossible to lock it down.

PC is still doing the heavy lifting

One clear trend does stand out: PC appears to be leading engagement, nearly doubling PS5 numbers. That lines up with broader shooter trends, but it also raises questions about console momentum for Bungie’s latest project.

For now, Marathon sits in an awkward space, seemingly active, but officially quiet. And that silence is what keeps the debate going.
