For nearly two decades, the God of War series has been closely tied to Kratos. From ancient Greece to the Nine Realms of Norse mythology, players have followed his journey through war, loss, and redemption. Now, Sony and Santa Monica Studio are preparing to tell a very different story.
The newly announced God of War Laufey will place Faye, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, at the centre of the action. Coming exclusively to PlayStation 5, the game marks one of the biggest changes the franchise has seen since its beginning.

Rather than continuing Kratos’ story directly, the new God of War Laufey adventure explores what happens after Faye’s death. She awakens in a mysterious realm known as the Everywhen, a place where gods from different mythologies exist together. What begins as a strange return soon becomes a fight for survival as Faye discovers that the future of her family may be in danger.

The Everywhen is unlike any location previously seen in God of War. Described as the source and destination of all magic, the realm sits beyond the worlds players have explored before. It is filled with powerful beings, ancient secrets, and conflicts that stretch across different mythologies.

Santa Monica Studio says the God of War Laufey game will answer a question that has lingered since the events of God of War Ragnarok: what becomes of a god after death? The Everywhen is expected to play a key role in uncovering that mystery.
While the God of War Laufey story introduces a new setting, the gameplay also brings a fresh approach. Faye is designed to be quicker and more agile than Kratos. Her combat focuses on speed, movement, and relentless attacks. Players will be able to chain together ground and aerial moves while maintaining momentum throughout battles.

One of Faye’s most unique abilities comes from her role as the Golden Hand of the Jotnar. She can manipulate souls during combat, pulling them from enemies and turning them into powerful weapons. The developers say these abilities create new opportunities for creative attacks and advanced combat strategies.

A legendary sword will serve as Faye’s main weapon throughout the journey. Combined with her mobility and magical powers, the sword allows her to fight in a style that feels very different from the heavy and powerful combat associated with Kratos.
The game will also introduce several new companions. Phranque, a curious cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid, and Rue, a magical guardian voiced by Perlina Lau, will join Faye as she travels deeper into the Everywhen. Along the way, players will encounter gods and creatures from multiple mythologies, including powerful figures such as Sekhmet and Begtse.
Deborah Ann Woll returns to portray Faye, giving players a chance to learn more about a character who has played an important role in the God of War universe despite rarely appearing on screen.
God of War Laufey launch
Although Sony has yet to announce a release date, God of War Laufey already stands out as one of the most ambitious changes in the franchise’s history. By stepping away from Kratos and focusing on Faye’s untold story, Santa Monica Studio appears ready to expand the God of War universe in a completely new way while keeping the action and storytelling that fans expect.
