Nintendo knows fans are not happy about the Switch 2 getting more expensive. The company just thinks the games will make people stay anyway.

During its latest earnings briefing, Shuntaro Furukawa admitted the new pricing will cause problems for players. Switch 2 consoles in the US are going up by $50 starting this September, while Nintendo Switch Online prices are also increasing in parts of Asia.

Admitting that the new pricing may increase “barrier” to purchase, Furukawa has an answer: more Nintendo games.“We will prepare a robust software lineup to enhance the Switch 2 ownership value. We will work diligently to overcome this barrier.”As is customary for a Japanese CEO, he added: …1/

Furukawa apologised for the situation and called it a “considerable inconvenience” for customers. That is not something Nintendo executives usually say this directly. The company also claimed the higher price still does not fully cover rising costs.

So now Nintendo needs the software to do the heavy lifting.

The company is leaning hard on upcoming releases to justify the extra spend. Reports point to a refreshed Star Fox 64, an Ocarina of Time remake, and Resident Evil Requiem arriving during the Switch 2 era. The bigger problem is timing.

According to well-known insider NateTheHate, the next big 3D Mario game may not land until 2027. The next major Pokémon titles are also reportedly targeting the same window. That leaves Nintendo needing smaller releases and remasters to carry momentum for the next two years.

Nintendo still has strong brands doing numbers. But asking players to pay more before the biggest system sellers arrive is a risky move, especially when the industry is already getting more expensive across the board.
