Fourteen years later, Star Citizen is still selling a dream. The difference now is the price tag attached to it.
Cloud Imperium Games has officially crossed the $1 billion (£735 million) crowdfunding mark for the long-running space sim. That number comes from millions of players buying ships, upgrades, subscriptions, and access packs since the project first appeared on Kickstarter in 2012.
At this point, Star Citizen is less of a game release and more of a permanent live event.

The project has survived delays, criticism, and years of “when is it actually coming out?” jokes. Yet the community keeps spending. New ship sales still pull in huge numbers every year, even while the full version remains unfinished.
To be fair, the game is no longer the broken tech demo critics mocked a decade ago. Recent updates added new missions, deeper survival systems, and more large-scale multiplayer features. The scale is massive. So is the ambition.
But players are still waiting for one thing: a real launch window.
Cloud Imperium says version 1.0 is still in development, with no confirmed release date attached. Meanwhile, Squadron 42 remains scheduled for 2026 after years of delays and cinematic trailers.

That leaves Star Citizen in a strange position. It is one of the most expensive games ever made, yet it still feels unfinished.
And somehow, the funding counter keeps going up.
