Bungie’s Marathon Isn’t Fully Planned, And That Might Be a Bigger Risk Than It Sounds

Marathon

Live service games love to talk about “player-driven futures,” but in Marathon’s case, that idea is starting to look a bit shaky.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, creative director Julia Nardin confirmed that Bungie has a multi-year narrative plan in place, just not a fixed one. The studio knows where things could go, but is deliberately leaving room for the community to steer the direction over time.

That sounds good on paper. In reality, it raises an obvious question: what happens when the player base shrinks?

Marathon

At the time of writing, Marathon is sitting at roughly 14,000 concurrent players on Steam, a steep drop from its 88,000 launch peak. That’s not exactly the kind of momentum you want when your long-term storytelling depends on active engagement.

There’s also the issue of consistency. Letting players influence the narrative can keep things fresh, but it can just as easily lead to a story that feels reactive rather than well-planned. And in a crowded live service market, that lack of direction can hurt retention even more.

Marathon

To Bungie’s credit, each season is designed as a new entry point, meaning latecomers won’t feel completely lost. But accessibility only solves half the problem, players still need a reason to stick around.

Right now, Marathon’s future isn’t just unwritten. It’s uncertain.
