Call of Duty Film Set in Modern Warfare Universe Ahead of 2028 Release

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 (1)

The upcoming Call of Duty film has finally revealed where its story will take place. Director Peter Berg confirmed that the project is set in the Modern Warfare universe, giving fans a clearer picture of what to expect before its planned 2028 release.

A familiar battlefield

The announcement came during a panel at Fanatics Fest in New York. Berg said the film will use the Modern Warfare setting rather than exploring another part of the long-running franchise.

It is an understandable choice. Modern Warfare remains the most recognisable name in Call of Duty. Characters such as Captain Price, Ghost and Soap are already well known, even outside the gaming community. That gives the film a strong starting point for both longtime fans and newcomers.

Games and cinema move together

The film is still expected to arrive on 30 June 2028. Activision has previously said it wants the adaptation to respect the games while also reaching a wider audience.

The timing also matches what is happening in the series itself. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is expected later this year and will continue the franchise’s biggest storyline. Activision has also teased a return to a more grounded style and confirmed new multiplayer features, including the large-scale Kill Block mode.

With both a major game and a film centred on Modern Warfare, it is clear which part of the franchise Activision believes has the strongest future.
