Something strange happened to Borderlands 4′s player count this week, and it wasn’t a big update or a sale banner.

The game had been quietly fading for months. After launching last September with a massive opening rush, it settled into a modest holding pattern, hovering somewhere around 2,000 to 2,500 people playing at once on Steam. Not dead, but far from its early buzz. Then, seemingly overnight, that number more than tripled.

Two things happened at once. Steam kicked off a free weekend for the title, which always pulls in curious newcomers who don’t want to commit money upfront. But the timing wasn’t accidental. Gearbox used the same window to launch a new playable character, Loveless the Hacker, and the internet noticed immediately, not just for her combat style but for the outfit attached to one of her premium cosmetic packs.

A skin doing more work than any patch

Loveless herself is built around aggression, described as a heavily augmented fighter with a fractured mind and a fast, relentless playstyle. That alone might have drawn some attention. What actually moved the needle was the $9.99 skin bundled into the Ornate Order Pack, included automatically for anyone holding the Super Deluxe Edition or Vault Hunter Pack. It’s an outfit designed to turn heads, and clips of it spread fast enough to pull lapsed players back in.

The result is Borderlands 4’s strongest single day since its launch week, crossing 20,000 concurrent players on Steam, a number the game hadn’t gotten close to in months.

Whether that momentum sticks past the free weekend is a different question. But for one week at least, a well-timed character reveal did more for player counts than any patch has managed all year.
