Marathon sales hit 1.2 million but the real story is who’s actually playing

Marathon Player Count

For a brand-new shooter, Marathon getting to 1.2 million copies sold sounds like a win on paper. But once you look closer at the Marathon sales, the picture isn’t as clean.

Data from Alinea Analytics shows that nearly 800K of those copies are coming from Steam alone. That leaves PS5 at around 217K and Xbox trailing further behind. It’s not just a gap, it’s a clear split in where the interest actually is.

There’s a strong pattern here. A huge chunk of players jumping into the game already spent time in Destiny 2. The crossover is high across all platforms, which tells you this isn’t a fresh crowd, it’s a familiar one.

Still, there’s some good news. Daily players are staying active, sitting between 300K and 480K, with a strong launch peak. That kind of retention matters, especially for a game built around repeat runs.

But here’s the thing, steady players don’t always mean growth. Right now, Marathon feels like it’s doing just enough to stay alive, not enough to explode.

And in today’s shooter space, that middle ground doesn’t stay safe for long.
