State of Decay 3 is still alive and “coming on really well,” Xbox says

State of Decay 3 hasn’t made much noise lately, but Xbox says things are moving along just fine.

The zombie sequel was first revealed in July 2020 and has spent most of its development out of the public eye. Apart from a short trailer in 2024 that showed quick flashes of gameplay, updates have been few and far between. That long silence has naturally raised questions.

State of Decay 3 – Official trailer

Those questions were partly answered after the recent Xbox Developer Direct.

In a chat with GamesRadar+, Xbox Games Studio head Craig Duncan was asked about the status of State of Decay 3. While he avoided promising new footage or announcements, he did confirm something more meaningful. He has been playing the game himself.

Duncan said he has visited Undead Labs several times over the past six to eight months. During those visits, he spent time with the team and played multiple builds of the game. According to him, development is heading in the right direction.

His exact words were simple: the game is “coming on really well”.

That’s not a release window, but it is reassurance. For a project that has been quiet for years, confirmation of steady progress matters. It also suggests the game is past early experimentation and firmly in production.

Right now, Xbox is publicly focused on closer releases like Fable and its wider 2026 plans. Even so, Duncan’s comments hint at growing confidence behind the scenes.

State of Decay 3 may still be keeping its distance, but it doesn’t sound like it’s in trouble.
