Marathon surprises PC gamers with low system requirements and a strange Steam bug

Marathon

Bungie has officially revealed the release date for Marathon, its upcoming extraction shooter. Alongside a new trailer, the studio also updated the game’s Steam page with full PC system requirements. Surprisingly, the specs are very forgiving and easy to meet.

This is good news for PC players who were worried about high hardware demands.

Marathon PC specs are easy to handle

One of the biggest attractions of Marathon is its bold art style and clean visuals. According to the listed requirements, the game does not need powerful hardware to run well.

Here are the official PC specs from Steam.

CategoryCPURAMGPU
Minimum requirementsIntel Core i5-6600 / AMD Ryzen 5 26008 GBGTX 1050 Ti (4 GB) / RX 5500 XT (4 GB)
Recommended requirementsIntel Core i5-10400 / AMD Ryzen 5 350016 GBGTX 2060 (6 GB) / RX 5700 XT (8 GB)

These parts are several years old. Some of the recommended GPUs launched back in 2019. This lowers the entry barrier for many players who do not own high-end PCs.

A growing trend in new PC games

Marathon is not alone in this approach. ARC Raiders, an extraction game by Embark Studios released in October 2025, also shipped with very similar PC requirements.

This is a big contrast to Escape from Tarkov. That game now asks for a modern CPU, an RTX 4070 or better, and up to 64 GB of RAM for the best experience.

Compared to that, Marathon looks far more welcoming.

A bizarre Steam bug installs Destiny 2

Shortly after pre-orders went live on Steam, players noticed something strange. Pre-ordering Marathon caused Destiny 2 to automatically install on their systems.

Both games are made by Bungie, but they are completely separate titles.

The bug quickly went viral on social media. One user joked that pre-ordering Marathon installs “a virus called Destiny 2.” Another said Bungie was trying to revive Destiny 2 by force.

Bungie responds and fixes the issue

Within hours, Bungie fixed the Steam bug. The studio also addressed another issue where Collector’s Edition owners could not redeem their game codes.

In a social media post, the team confirmed that both problems were resolved.

Despite the fix, the jokes continued. Many fans poked fun at the situation, calling it one of the strangest pre-order bugs seen in recent years.

Release date and special accessories

Marathon is set to launch on March 5. To mark the release, PlayStation has announced limited-edition Marathon-themed peripherals. These will be available for pre-order starting January 29.

Hopefully, buying a controller will not trigger another unexpected install.
