007 First Light Hits Gold as Ex-EA Producer Says Bond Games Missed the Mark

007 First Light Gone Gold

IO Interactive has cleared a major milestone for 007 First Light.

The studio confirmed the game has officially gone gold ahead of its 27 May release. That means the final build is done and ready to head into manufacturing while the team focuses on last-minute fixes.

It is a big moment for the long-awaited Bond project. 007 First Light was originally planned for March before slipping back by a couple of months. Now, barring disaster, players are finally close to getting their hands on it.

The timing also lines up with fresh comments from former EA producer Chuck Beaver, who worked on earlier Bond titles during the PS2 era.

Speaking about the old games, Beaver admitted the franchise never fully found its footing after GoldenEye. According to him, the problem was not James Bond himself. It was the lack of a clear direction.

He pointed to Batman: Arkham Asylum as the game that showed what Bond titles could have become. Beaver said the mix of stealth, gadgets, combat, and cinematic storytelling would have suited 007 perfectly.

Back then, the tech and design ideas were still catching up. Today, things are different.

That could work in IO Interactive’s favour. The studio already knows how to build stealth sandboxes thanks to Hitman, and 007 First Light appears to be leaning heavily into that style.

After years of weak Bond games and cancelled projects, this may finally be the one that gets it right.
