PS6 looks powerful as Sony may use custom RDNA 5 chip

Playstation 6 (PS6)

Sony’s next console, the PlayStation 6 (PS6), is already creating buzz online. While the company has not shared official details yet, many reports say that Sony is once again working with AMD for the main chip inside the console. A new rumour now suggests that the PS6 could still be very powerful, even if it does not use the full version of AMD’s next graphics design.

The leak comes from KeplerL2, a well-known insider on the NeoGAF forum. According to the post, the PS6 will use AMD’s upcoming RDNA 5 graphics architecture, but it may not include every feature that comes with the full desktop version.

PS6

This may sound surprising at first, but it is actually normal for consoles. For example, the current PlayStation 5 does not use the complete RDNA 2 feature set either. Console makers often work with AMD to create custom chips that focus only on what is needed for gaming. This helps control cost, power use, and heat.

The rumour does not clearly say which features could be removed. Some people online believe that an NPU, which is mainly used for AI tasks, may not be included if it does not bring clear gaming benefits. Others think some professional or productivity features might be cut, as consoles are made mainly for playing games, not for heavy creative work.

At the same time, AMD has been promoting AI improvements in its newer designs as gaming upgrades. So it is also possible that Sony keeps some of these features if they improve graphics, frame rates, or loading times.

PS6 expected launch

There are also reports that the PS6 launch could happen around 2029, although nothing is confirmed. If true, that gives Sony enough time to refine the hardware and deliver a strong next-generation experience.

For now, this is still a rumour. But one thing is clear. Sony is likely building a focused and powerful system designed only for gaming. And if past consoles are any guide, a custom chip could help the PS6 offer better performance in real-world games, even without every single feature of RDNA 5.
