Assassin’s Creed Netflix series taps Chernobyl director for adaptation

Assassin's Creed Netflix Show

Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series is starting to look far more serious, with a major name now attached behind the camera.

According to a new report from Variety, Johan Renck, the director behind HBO’s critically acclaimed Chernobyl, has been brought in to helm the upcoming adaptation. It’s a big statement move from Netflix, especially for a franchise that has struggled on screen before.

Things have been moving quickly. Just last month, it was confirmed that Toby Wallace would take on the lead role, while an earlier report hinted at the show’s historical setting. Now, with Renck locked in, the creative direction is becoming clearer.

Renck’s CV goes well beyond Chernobyl. He has also directed The Last Panther and episodes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Vikings and Bates Motel. It’s a level of prestige that should reassure fans who are wary of another weak video game adaptation.

The series will be created and run by Roberto Patino and David Wiener, with Ubisoft Film & Television heavily involved as executive producers.

While plot details remain under wraps, the official logline confirms the familiar setup: a secret war between two shadowy factions, one seeking control, the other fighting for free will. At the time of writing, that’s as Assassin’s Creed as it gets.
