You don’t need old Divinity games to play Larian’s next RPG

Larian Studios has made one thing clear about its upcoming Divinity title: new players won’t need to dig through the series’ past to understand what’s coming next.

After reintroducing the game at The Game Awards, the studio has slowly been sharing more details, and one big question keeps coming up, do players need to catch up on older Divinity games first? According to studio founder Swen Vincke, the answer is no.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, Vincke explained that earlier entries like Ego Draconis and The Dragon Knight Saga will exist purely as background lore. Events from those games may be referenced, but they won’t be required knowledge to enjoy the new story.

Divinity’s past is now just background lore

Vincke also noted that players who enjoyed Baldur’s Gate 3 shouldn’t feel pressured to revisit older Divinity titles unless they’re genuinely interested in the lore. If anything, Original Sin II is the more relevant experience, as it helped shape the tactical combat and freedom seen in Baldur’s Gate 3.

The new Divinity game will launch in Early Access, following Larian’s usual approach of using player feedback to refine the experience. While some fans still hope for a return to real-time combat, Larian is sticking with turn-based, co-op-focused gameplay, the formula that’s been working for them.
