Witcher 4 dev admits pressure is real: “Yeah… how are we going to do that?”

The Witcher IV - Kovir mountains

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt sold over 60 million copies. It’s one of the biggest RPGs ever made. So how does CD Projekt Red follow that up? Narrative director Philipp Weber isn’t sure either.

“I’m like, ‘Yeah, how are we going to do that?’” he told GamesRadar.

Not trying to top it

Weber said they’re not trying to beat Witcher 3. Instead, the team is sticking to the same creative approach care, storytelling, and decision-making.

“Take the philosophy we had during The Witcher 3 how to make a game, how to really care about these things, how to tell stories and keep that philosophy.”

It’s a full sequel, not a rehash. They’re asking new questions and avoiding old ground.

“It’s really trying to have that healthy mix of really moving forward and also trying out some new things but doing justice to what was there, not trying to beat it.”

“Do it dirty”

Weber also talked about the way Witcher 3 was made. Developers worked outside their roles and figured things out as they went.

“Sometimes I like to just say, ‘Get it done. Do it dirty. Do it the way we used to do it!’”

That mindset is back for Witcher 4.

Ciri takes the lead

The Witcher 4 puts Ciri in the spotlight, and some fans aren’t happy. Critics have called it “woke,” but Geralt’s voice actor has publicly pushed back.

The game’s tech demo shown earlier this year looked good but it wasn’t actual gameplay.

The Witcher 4 - Ciri

No release date yet for Witcher 4. 2027 is the earliest. CD Projekt is also working on Cyberpunk 2, a Witcher 1 remake, and a new title backed by Saudi funding.
