Bungie has delayed its upcoming extraction shooter Marathon, which was originally planned to release on 23 September 2025. No new date has been confirmed, but the team says players can expect an update later this fall with development progress and a new timeline.
The news was shared through a blog post by the Marathon development team. It’s the first major communication from them since Bungie addressed the issue of a former artist using unlicensed assets from creator Antireal.

“Thank you not only for your passionate feedback around the Marathon reveal and Alpha playtest, but also for your patience while we took the time to listen closely and chart our next steps,” the post reads.
Bungie says the extra time will help them build a stronger game that better matches player expectations. Key areas of focus include improving AI to make survival encounters more engaging and creating more rewarding runs with better loot and dynamic events. Combat will also be adjusted to feel more strategic and tense.
Bungie wants Marathon to go deeper
The team says they are doubling down on the Marathon universe. That includes visual upgrades, darker tones that reflect the original trilogy, and more storytelling through the environment. Narrative elements will be easier to discover and interact with across the game.

Solo and duo players will also see improvements, and Bungie confirmed that proximity chat support is being added to enhance communication during matches.
“You’ll hear from us again later this fall when we can share the progress we’ve made,” Bungie added, closing the blog with thanks to fans for their continued support and feedback.
The delay doesn’t come as a big surprise. Reports had already suggested a canceled marketing push, and the situation around the stolen art likely forced major visual changes. These adjustments take time.

Hopefully, when fall arrives, the next update will show real progress and not just another sign that Marathon is stuck in development.
