Prime Video has finally cast Kratos for its live-action God of War series, and the choice will make fans of both TV and games sit up. Ryan Hurst, best known as Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy, will take on the role of the Ghost of Sparta.

Hurst isn’t new to the world of gaming. He voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök, earning a BAFTA nomination in 2022 for Performer in a Supporting Role. That experience could give him a head start when stepping into Kratos’ brutal boots. He also has the acting chops to balance the rage and depth Kratos is known for.

Reports suggest Ólafur Darri Ólafsson is in talks to play Thor in the series, though nothing is official yet. The show will cover the Norse saga from God of War (2018) and Ragnarök, following Kratos and Atreus as they scatter Faye’s ashes. Along the way, the father-son duo navigate what it means to be a god, and a human.

Fast-track production and God of War season two

Production is already moving fast. The series has been renewed for a second season before filming even starts. Shooting is expected to kick off in February, with the first two episodes directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, known for The Boys and Fallout.
