Google is quietly working on a brand-new desktop operating system called Aluminium OS, and a recent leak has given us the clearest look yet. The system appeared by mistake in Google’s own Issue Tracker, where a bug report included screen recordings of the new software running live.

The leak was first spotted by 9to5Google, who managed to save the videos before they were taken down. These clips show Aluminium OS running on a laptop powered by Intel hardware, which is a big change for Android. Until now, Android has mainly been used on Arm-based phones and tablets.

Aluminium OS is built on Android 16 and is being tested on an HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook with a 12th-generation Intel Core processor. This confirms that Google is serious about bringing Android fully to x86 PCs, not just mobile devices.

The desktop design looks clean and modern. It feels like a mix of macOS and Linux, with a taskbar placed at the bottom of the screen. The taskbar icons are centred, similar to Windows 11. Battery and Wi-Fi icons sit at the top right, along with a dedicated Gemini button for quick AI access.

Google has already hinted at this plan before. In September 2025, during Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, Cristiano Amon and Rick Osterloh talked about merging ChromeOS and Android into one platform. Aluminium OS seems to be the result of that idea.

The new system is expected to focus heavily on AI. With support for powerful processors and built-in NPUs, Google wants its Gemini features and open-source Gemma AI models to run directly on the device. This means faster performance and better privacy, without relying fully on the cloud.

While Google has not officially announced Aluminium OS yet, this leak strongly suggests that Android for PC is finally becoming real. If done right, it could offer users a simple, fast, and smart desktop experience powered by Android.
