Capcom’s RE Engine has powered every major release since Resident Evil 7, but the studio recently revealed that it needed a surprising tweak for its upcoming sci-fi adventure Pragmata. The change wasn’t for combat or environments – it was for hair.

Producer Naoto Oyama explained in an interview with VGC that Pragmata’s character Diana features very long hair, something the engine wasn’t originally designed to handle. Previous Capcom titles mostly used technology suited for shorter hairstyles, but Diana’s flowing strands required new adjustments. “One of these which is visually easy to understand is Diana’s hair, which is made up of strands,” Oyama said, highlighting how the RE Engine team had to adapt their tools.
While this upgrade might seem small, it could influence future Capcom games, potentially allowing for more diverse character designs. Asked jokingly if fans might see zombies with luxurious locks one day, Oyama laughed, leaving the idea open-ended.
Pragmata was first revealed in 2020 but faced several delays, including an indefinite hold. Now, the game is back on track and slated for a 2026 release, launching on PS5, Xbox, and PC.
