Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake faces fresh delay after Ubisoft shake-up

Ubisoft’s latest restructuring update has landed, and it comes with another blow for fans. Buried in the company’s new strategy document is a delay that almost certainly applies to the Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake.

The publisher confirmed it is reshuffling development under newly formed Creative Houses. The goal is higher quality and better long-term value. The cost, however, is familiar. Layoffs have been announced. Multiple projects have been cancelled. And several games are being given more time.

One of those games appears to be Black Flag.

Black Flag pushed back for quality targets

In its statement, Ubisoft said seven titles are receiving additional development time to meet “enhanced quality benchmarks”. Among them is an unannounced game originally planned for FY26, now delayed to FY27.

That description narrows the field quickly. Reports from last year claimed the Black Flag remake was targeting a release before the end of FY26, possibly as early as March. The project is still unannounced, which matches Ubisoft’s wording almost perfectly.

If the shift is a full financial year, the remake could now be as much as twelve months away. At the time of writing, a late FY27 release is possible, but no window has been confirmed by Ubisoft or Vantage Studios.

The delay sits alongside the cancellation of three unannounced IPs and an unrevealed mobile game. For Ubisoft, it’s another reminder that rebuilding trust takes longer than delaying a release.
