Excitement around AMD’s new CPUs spiked recently when a leaked PassMark benchmark suggested the upcoming Ryzen 7 9700X3D could deliver outstanding performance. The listing claimed the eight-core, 16-thread Zen 5 processor had 96 MB of L3 cache and could boost up to 5.8 GHz. According to the leak, it scored 4,687 points in single-threaded tests and 40,438 in multi-threaded benchmarks, slightly ahead of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.

These numbers hinted at a strong option for mid-range gaming, possibly following AMD’s approach with the Ryzen 7 5700X3D, offering high performance with slightly lower clocks and price. Fans were also excited by rumours of other upcoming chips, including the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, and Ryzen 5 7500X3D, potentially making CES 2026 a big event for AMD announcements.

Ryzen 7 9700X3D for real?

However, the news took a twist when the benchmark was revealed to be faked. Reddit users confirmed that Linux commands were used to spoof Ryzen 9700X3D CPU data from a standard 9700X, creating the illusion of higher performance. While the scores were impressive, they were not genuine, serving as a reminder to treat unverified leaks carefully.

Despite the hoax, the leak generated a lot of excitement about AMD’s next 3D V-Cache CPUs. Gamers can still look forward to new Ryzen releases in the coming months, which promise strong gaming performance and innovative features.
