The future of Metal Gear Solid is wide open, according to series producer Noriaki Okamura. After the launch of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, he says the team wants to keep the series alive, but the path forward could be a mix of fresh games and carefully chosen remakes.
Different Metal Gear Solid games need different remake styles
Okamura explained that the Delta approach cannot be used for every title. Each game has its own style, so every remake needs its own method. This makes full 3D remakes of the older 8-bit games unlikely.

Almost every main entry is already playable on modern platforms, except Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It is still locked to the PlayStation 3, and the complex code built for that system makes a modern update difficult. Even so, hints point to a possible return in a future Master Collection Vol. 2.
Nothing is confirmed yet, but Konami seems ready to explore new stories, new remakes, and new ways to bring Metal Gear back to players.
