Marathon’s latest hands-on shows dark PvE, strategic seasons, and richer story

Marathon

Bungie recently held a hands-on preview of Marathon in Shanghai, giving Chinese media their first look outside North America. The new build emphasises strategy, story, and high-stakes PvE.

The narrative is tighter now. Tutorials and faction intros explain motivations clearly, and characters feel grounded. Dr. Strauss returns as a key link between the classic trilogy and the new game, giving longtime fans a familiar anchor.

Marathon

PvE is no walk in the park. Enemies call reinforcements, and maps are loaded with hazards, from poison vents to turrets and landmines. Supplies like healing and shields are costly, forcing players to balance risk and reward carefully. Combat is punishing if you rush in without planning.

Visually, Marathon has taken a darker turn. Environments feel mysterious, and the UI has been overhauled, though some players noted it still takes adjustment. Weapon variety impresses as always, with 28 guns, multiple skins, charms, and stickers tied to challenges.

Seasons now reset player progress, creating a months-long roguelike experience. Resources start to be scarce, and growth feels earned. Cosmetics remain permanent, giving continuity across seasons.

Marathon

Marathon hits PC, PS5, and Xbox Series on 5 March. With these changes, Bungie is clearly aiming to make players think before they shoot; whether that pays off will be clear soon.
