Need for Speed: Rivals is losing its online features later this year. EA has confirmed that online support will end on October 7, 2025. The update was first spotted by Delisted Games, after a reader noticed Rivals on EA’s shutdown list.
The shutdown affects the PS4 and Xbox One versions. That also means no online play on PS5 or Xbox Series through backward compatibility. You won’t be able to race other players, join multiplayer events, or use online features after that date.

Need for Speed: Rivals first launched in 2013 on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. It came to PS4 and Xbox One in October 2014. It’s been around for over 10 years, so the shutdown isn’t a surprise.
You can still play offline after October 7. Need for Speed: Rivals’ single-player mode will remain. That’s more than what some other games offer.
No offline mode, no game
Games like Anthem won’t be as lucky. EA is also shutting down its servers in 2026. Since Anthem has no offline option, it will become unplayable.

Moves like this have sparked anger in the community. That’s why the Stop Killing Games campaign started. The group wants laws to stop publishers from taking away access to games people paid for.
The campaign has passed 1 million signatures. Still, some companies say the proposals would make online games too costly to create.

Minecraft creator Notch spoke out too. He said, “If buying a game is not a purchase, then pirating them is not theft.” His point: if publishers control access, then players don’t really own their games.
You’ve got time to jump back into Rivals online. But come October, it’ll just be you and the AI.
